Truecrypt 5.0 is OUT!
OK guys, TrueCrypt 5.0 is really out and it really rocks
Bashing the guys at TC was a sort of speedup for a work that, we’re sure, without our contribution would have been unpublished for at least another couple of years.
Some little difference in TC and OSXCrypt must be taken in account:
- OSXCrypt is a kernel module, and not based on MacFuse. That gives the project a really different approach.
- The OSXCrypt Framework is based on the paradigm of implementing a modular kernel module that can be used with OTHER cyphers. Implementing dm-cryppt on mac, for example, is now trivially easy.
- The GUI is coming even here, thanks to the efforts of a volunteer.
And to the TC guys: you rock and you finally did it. Thanks! Really.
We’ve been waiting for this Mac version for three years and we committed ourself to porting it only when all the other approaches (financing, lending an hand, handgun intimidation…) failed miserably.
We still think that without our contribution the MAC community would have been left without this wonderful software for long time. Maybe we’re wring, maybe we’re not.
Trolling isn’t always an answer, but sometimes it pays out. We did it for the lulz….
And if some funder want their money back, ask freely and we’ll return it.
We think we not only fulfilled our promise, but we exceeded the expectations you were putting on us.
Time to go on! Stay tuned!
matteo.

I really think most of us understand it.
Even if bashing is neither polite not pretty in this case I think that without OsxCrypt (and orlando, fabio and mateo) we would not have been here today having TC5 and OSXCrypt.
For the moment I’ll stick to OSXCrypt. A kernel module is far superior in performance than MACFuse and I’ll like the possibility to switch cyphers.
Go on, guys. I really think I spent my money in the best way.
…and I think we can stop bashing, now, can’t we? =]
Cheers guys!
Same feelings of Mark here.
Go on, we trust you!
(as long as you provide sourcecode and SHA1, of course! ;))
Keep up the good work!
(And keep my money, you deserved it!)
I hope the GUI will come soon and that there will be some favourable performance reviews once you release a “full” version with all the bells and whistles Truecrypt has (and more cyphers)
Just an experience, cause the tc-forum is still closed.
I used OSXCrypt for several days without an issue (thanks very much to you guys building up this port!) and switched today to TCMac. I´m not that kind of terminal-user, I feel safer with a GUI.
I properly deinstalled OSXCrypt as described in the instructions, rebooted, and installed TC. I created a disk and copied some stuff (about 600mbs) into it. Everytime, when the Finder wants to copy a huge pdf-file (90mb), it stops with an error-message: The finder couldn´t finish this job, because some data in “filename.pdf” couldn´t be read or written. (Error:-36)
I repeated this scenario with OSXCrypt and everything went fine.
The only difference with creating the virutal disk was the chosen encryption-algorithm. I´m clueless as a pure end-user, but glad to have a working alternative with OSXCrypt.
How did you guys get this to work? I’m using Leopard on Intel and when I unzip the file it creates a dmg file on the desktop. I try and launch the dmg file and it tells me the disk image failed to mount and their are no mountable file systems. Am I doing something wrong?
Just my little word of advice: TrueCryt 5 just killed my Truecrypt drive. Fullstop.
I’ve been using OSXCrypt for a while along with windows from a network share and everything was fine (I accessed the file either from MAC or from WIN).
Today I decided to install Truecrypt 5.0 instead of OSXCrypt mainly in fear of potential errors (OSXCrypt do not claim to be perfect, still) but once I opened my TrueCrypt image in TrueCrypt 5 and started copying a big file (200mb) it crashed and left me with a volume I cannot mount neither in WIN nor in MAC.
I strongly believe I deserve it for not trusting OSXCrypt which had served me well for over a month of intense use…
Now the funny part: Forum for TC5 is closed and thay seem not to be responding to e-mails.
I think I’ll revert to my one month old backup and stick to OSXCrypt for a while longer… I’m not tech savy and the idea to have a GUI was more than appealing… But data is far more important.
Greetings from Turkey
Today TrueCrypt 5.0 killed my Encrypted (AES-Twofish) after 5 minutes of use and one large file transfer.
Sh*t, guys, for God’s sake WAIT before syncing up with TC5!
I want at least ONE way to use the software WITHOUT destroying my volumes…
To John: no prob on my side with the dmg-mounting. After downloading the installation-file with Leopard it automatically is extracted and the dmg shows up, so I have just to click the install-prog.
To all others: so I´m not alone with TC5Mac-issues. I forgot to add, that after the Finder refuses to copy a big file into the TC-drive, the TC-drive is detached automatically, but still appears in the Finder-sidebar. Weird. And the folders in the TC-drive seem to be somewhat corrupted: if I´m trying to copy a file into a TC-drive-folder afterwards, the Finder refuses it with saying “The file already exists”, but in the Finder the folder is totally empty.
As I said: no probs so far with OSXcrypt, so I´ll stick to that port and looking forward to the GUI.
Thanks again to the programmers of OSXcrypt!
No problems on MY installation of Truecrypt 5.0 (even if I’m still using OSXCrypt for day to day use) but two times in 24 hours I got the screams of cubicles nearby where people lost their data due to moving files in a volume mounted with the real Truecrypt on mac.
My firm uses TrueCrypt for day by day use and all the designers got TC installed yesterday on their MAC. My little personal MacBook, instead, is functioning great thanks to you guys.
Moved by my remorse I just sent an e-mail to the tech guys with an URL to osxcrypt.org
Thanks guys. I’m very proud of being a funder. Really.
Same problem here. Moved 2 gigs of MP3 from my Itunes library to the TrueCrypt 5.0 volume and the darn thing crashed and I lost all.
No problems right here and now with OSXCrypt, though…
Damn, I’d really like a GUI, guys…
Hm, I thought the official TC5 would be rock solid. Does OSC support full devices yet? I don’t want to risk my 2TB drive array
@john
If you are talking about the truecrypt dmg not mounting, try just removing the .bz2 from the end of the filename. Apparently it is not bzipped, it is just a dmg.
Thanks James. I should have thought of that myself. It mounts and installs just fine.
To all those who lost their data on TC5: damn, guys, didn’t your daddy teach you the word “BACKUP”?
I hope you lost just… huh… the things you need to hide from your girlfriend’s eyes, and not some important data. Stick with OSXCrypt, but always make regular backups
Does anyone would be interested in another funding campaign in order to feature enrich OSXCrypt?
Are you willing to provide other funding in order to became the de-facto leading encryption software for Mac OS X?
With enough effort we could also do pre-boot authentication and full encryption on Mac OS X!
Mounting a TrueCrypt image via MacFUSE? That doesn’t sound that secure!
Any news ? Show us some commit log! ;P
